As I Awake

All of my senses are met by the morning
As I awake breathing in a new day,
Here by the window I opened last evening,
How the world changed while I drifted away

Darkness is gone, though it seemed it would never;
Sunlight is smiling and nature survives.
I can believe that we all live forever
When I observe how the morning arrives

Birds sing their concert and children are playing;
Flowers have scented the air and it’s free;
Life is renewed and it seems to be saying
There is a place in its promise for me

There are some times in our lives when we savor
Being a part of a much larger plan.
Life is a feast and we each add a flavor;
I’ll make it better, believing I can

What is an idiom?

An idiom is a combination of words that has a meaning that is different from the meanings of the individual words themselves. It can have a literal meaning in one situation and a different idiomatic meaning in another situation. It is a phrase which does not always follow the normal rules of meaning and grammar.
To sit on the fence can literally mean that one is sitting on a fence.

I sat on the fence and watched the game.
However, the idiomatic meaning of to sit on the fence is that one is not making a clear choice regarding some issue.

The politician sat on the fence and would not give his opinion about the tax issue.

Many idioms are similar to expressions in other languages and can be easy for a learner to understand. Other idioms come from older phrases which have changed over time.

To hold one's horses means to stop and wait patiently for someone or something. It comes from a time when people rode horses and would have to hold their horses while waiting for someone or something.
"Hold your horses," I said when my friend started to leave the store.

What is a proverb?

A proverb is a short saying or sentence that is generally known by many people. The saying usually contains words of wisdom, truth or morals that are based on common sense or practical experience. It is often a description of a basic rule of conduct that all people generally follow or should follow. Proverbs can be found in all languages.

money doesn't grow on trees - money is not easy to get and you must work hard for it

The girl's father often says that money doesn't grow on trees when she asks him for money.

the early bird catches the worm - arriving early gives one an advantage
My boss always comes to work early because he believes that the early bird catches the worm.

the pen is mightier than the sword - writing and ideas are more powerful than the use of force

The pen is mightier than the sword and a good idea or strong beliefs will defeat the strongest army

   Homework, I Love You

Homework, I love you. I think that you’re great.

It’s wonderful fun when you keep me up late.

I think you’re the best when I’m totally stressed,

preparing and cramming all night for a test

Homework, I love you. What more can I say

I love to do hundreds of problems each day

You boggle my mind and you make me go blind

but still I’m ecstatic that you were assigned

Homework, I love you. I tell you, it’s true

There’s nothing more fun or exciting to do

You’re never a chore, for it’s you I adore

I wish that our teacher would hand you out more

Homework, I love you. You thrill me inside.

I’m filled with emotions. I’m fit to be tied.

I cannot complain when you frazzle my brain
Of course, that’s because I’m completely insane

Get Out of Bed!      by Diane Z. Shore

"Get out of bed, you silly fool!
Get up right now, it's time for school
If you don't dress without a fuss,
I'll throw you naked on the bus

"Oh, Mom, don't make me go today.
I'm feeling worse than yesterday.
You don't know what I'm going through.
I've got a strange, rare case of flu

"My body aches, my throat is sore.
I'm sure I'm knocking on death's door.
You can't send me to school-achoo!-
'Cause everyone could get it, too

"Besides, the kids despise me there.
They always tease and always stare.
And all the teachers know my name.
When something's wrong, it's me they blame

"You faked a headache yesterday.
Don't pull that stuff on me today.
Stop acting like a silly fool-
The principal cannot skip school

Water

Water is the most common liquid in the world. Lakes contain water. Rivers contain
water. Ponds contain water. Canals contain water. Oceans contain water. The water in rivers, ponds, and canals is fresh water. The water in oceans is salt water.

About 70% of the world is covered by water. About 97% of water in the world is salt
water. Only 3% of the world’s water is fresh water. Fresh water  is not salty.

People usually think of water as a liquid. But water freezes to form a solid. The solid is
called ice. And water boils to form a gas. The gas is called steam or vapor.

Clouds are made of water. Water falls from clouds as rain. When it is cold, water falls as
snow. Sometimes water falls as sleet. Sleet is partly water and partly ice. Sometimes water falls as hail. Hail is ice.

People need water to live. Animals need water to live. Insects need water to live. Plants
need water to live. All living things in the world need water to live.

People all over the world need to drink clean water to live. About one billion people in
the world do not have clean drinking water. The largest cause of preventable human death in the world is drinking water that is unsanitary

Sayings of Imam Ali

The sin which makes you sad and repentant is more liked by Allah than the good deed which turns you arrogant

وَ قَالَ [عليه السلام] سَيِّئَةٌ تَسُوءُكَ خَيْرٌ عِنْدَ اللَّهِ مِنْ حَسَنَةٍ تُعْجِبُكَ

دورد خدا بر او ، فرمود : گناهى كه تو را پشيمان كند بهتر از كار نيكى است كه تو را به خود پسندى وا دارد.

Tongue is a beast, if it is let loose, it devours

وَ قَالَ [عليه السلام] اللِّسَانُ سَبُعٌ إِنْ خُلِّيَ عَنْهُ عَقَرَ .

و درود خدا بر او ، فرمود : زبان تربيت نشده ، درنده اى است كه اگر رهايش كنى مى گزد.

The wiser a man is, the less talkative will he be

وَ قَالَ [عليه السلام] إِذَا تَمَّ الْعَقْلُ نَقَصَ الْكَلَامُ .

و درود خدا بر او ، فرمود : چون عقل كامل گردد ، سخن اندك شود

Knowledge and wisdom are really the privilege of a faithful

Muslim. If you have lost them, get them back even though

you may have to get them from the apostates

وَ قَالَ [عليه السلام] الْحِكْمَةُ ضَالَّةُ الْمُؤْمِنِ فَخُذِ الْحِكْمَةَ وَ لَوْ مِنْ أَهْلِ النِّفَاقِ .

و درود خدا بر او ، فرمود : حكمت ،گمشدة مؤمن است ، حكمت را فراگير هر چند از منافقان باشد.

The Ten Best Vocabulary Learning Tips

  • Vocabulary Learning Tip One: Read, Read, Read
  •  Most vocabulary words are learned from context. The more words you're exposed to, the better vocabulary you will have. While you read, pay close attention to words you don't know. First, try to figure out their meanings from context. Then look the words up. Read and listen to challenging material so that you'll be exposed to many new words
    • Vocabulary Learning Tip Two: Improve your context skills. Research shows that the vast majority of words are learned from context. To improve your context skills pay close attention to how words are used
    • Vocabulary Learning Tip Three: Practice, practice, practice. Learning a word won't help very much if you promptly forget it. Research shows that it takes from 10 to 20 repetitions to really make a word part of your vocabulary. It helps to write the word - both the definition and a sentence you make up using the word - perhaps on an index card that can later be reviewed. As soon as you learn a new word, start using it. Review your index cards periodically to see if you have forgotten any of your new words.
    • Vocabulary Learning Tip Four: Make up as many associations and connections as possible
    •  Say the word aloud to activate your auditory memory. Relate the word to words you already know. For example, the word GARGANTUAN (very large) has a similar meaning to the words gigantic, huge, large, etc. You could make a sequence: small, medium, large, very large, GARGANTUAN. List as many things as you can that could be considered GARGANTUAN: Godzilla, the circus fat lady, the zit on your nose, etc. Create pictures of the word's meaning that involve strong emotions. Think "the GARGANTUAN creature was going to rip me apart and then eat me

    • Vocabulary Learning Tip Five: Use mnemonics ( memory tricks). For example, consider the word EGREGIOUS (extremely bad). Think EGG REACH US - imagine we've made a mistake so bad that they are throwing eggs at us and a rotten EGG REACHes US. Such funny little word pictures will help you remember what words mean, AND they are fun to make up. Also, find out which learning style suits you best. Everyone learns differently

    • Vocabulary Learning Tip Six: Get in the habit of looking up words you don't know. If you have a dictionary program on your computer, keep it open and handy.  look up any word you are not absolutely sure of

    • Vocabulary Learning Tip Seven: Play with words
    •  Play Scrabble, Boggle, and do crossword puzzles. These and other word games are available for the computer, so you are not dependent on a partner to play.

    • Vocabulary Learning Tip Eight: Use vocabulary lists
    •  For the serious vocabulary student, there are many books that focus on the words most commonly found in standardized tests, such as the SAT and GRE. There are also many interesting word sites on the Internet

    • Vocabulary Learning Tip Nine: Take vocabulary tests
    •  Playing games, that test your knowledge will help you learn new words and also let you know how much progress you're making

    • Vocabulary Learning Tip Ten: Get excited about words! Come to appreciate the sometimes-subtle differences between them. Do you know the difference between something that denotes something else and something that connotes something else? If not, go look it up. Learn to say what you really mean and discover the joys of being able to express yourself in writing. Your future can depend on how rich your vocabulary is. Remember: "In the beginning was the word." Until you have a word for something, it does not exist for you. Name it, and you have made your reality richer

Two frogs

A group of frogs were traveling through the woods, and two of them
fell into a deep pit. When the other frogs saw how deep the pit
was, they told the two frogs that they were as good as dead. The
two frogs ignored the comments and tried to jump up out of the pit
with all their might. The other frogs kept telling them to stop,
that they were as good as dead. Finally, one of the frogs took
heed to what the other frogs were saying and gave up. He fell down
and died.

The other frog continued to jump as hard as he could. Once again,
the crowd of frogs yelled at him to stop the pain and just die. He
jumped even harder and finally made it out. When he got out, the
other frogs said, "Did you not hear us?" The frog explained to
them that he was deaf. He thought they were encouraging him the
entire time.

This story teaches two lessons:

1. There is power of life and death in the tongue. An encouraging
word to someone who is down can lift them up and help them make it
through the day.

2. A destructive word to someone who is down can be what it takes
to kill them.

Be careful of what you say. Speak life to those who cross your
path. The power of words... it is sometimes hard to understand
that an encouraging word can go such a long way. Anyone can speak
words that tend to rob another of the spirit to continue in
difficult times. Special is the individual who will take the time
to encourage another.

Sayings of Imam Ali:

You should hope for no one other than the Lord, not fear anything other than your guilt, not be embarrassed to say, 'I do not know' when you do not know, and you should not feel too haughty to learn what you do not know. These four matters are so great that it is so easy for you to ride for long time so as to get them

کسی از شما جز به پروردگار خود امیدوار نباشد و جز از گناه خود نترسد و اگر از یکی سئوال کردند و نمی داند شرم نکند و بگوید نمی دانم و کسی شرم نکند در آنچه نمی داند بیاموزد.این چهار چیز است که اگر برای آنها شتران را پر شتاب برانید و رنج سفر را تحمل کنید سزاوار است

How to Torture Your Students

by Jane Pomazal and Bruce Lansky

Start each day with a surprise quiz

Don’t dismiss the class for recess

until you’ve finished the lesson

you’re working on

At the end of the day, hand out a huge

assignment that’s due the next day

When a student says, "I have to go to

the bathroom," say, "You should have

gone this morning before you left

home" or "You’ll have to hold it in

it’s time for the kindergarten to use

the bathrooms

Never call on students who have

their hands up

Only call on students who have

no idea what’s going on

When a student asks you a question

say, "Look up the answer in a book

Don’t bother to mention the name

of the book in which the answer

can be found

When you read, go as fast as you can

Skip a line or two, then ask questions

about the passage to see if the

students were listening

When it’s time for the students to

read, call on someone who doesn’t

have a book

When you hand out pencils, make sure

they’re dull and don’t have erasers

When you hand out books, make

sure they’re torn and tattered

When preparing the students for

a test, write all the information

they’ll need to know on the board.

Then stand in front of the board so

they can’t see what you’ve written.

As soon as you’ve finished discussing

the test information, turn quickly and

erase the board

On the last day of school, hand

out a surprise final exam

Tell your students if they flunk it, they’ll

have to attend summer school—and

if they flunk summer school, they’ll

have to repeat the grade

Tell them you hope they all flunk

because you like them so much and

you wish they could be your students

again next year

My Teacher Sees Right Through Me

I didn’t do my homework.
My teacher asked me, “Why?”
I answered him, “It’s much too hard.”
He said, “You didn’t try

I told him, “My dog ate it.”
He said, “You have no dog.”
I said, “I went out running.”
He said, “You never jog

I told him, “I had chores to do.”
He said, “You watched TV.”
I said, “I saw the doctor.”
He said, “You were with me

My teacher sees right through my fibs,
which makes me very sad.
